Welcome to Dan's Submarine site!
Here's my beloved Submarine, the USS Gato SSN-615 as she appeared during her shakedown cruise.
Here she is now, her reactor compartment buried in a trench at Hanford. You probably shaved with the rest of her this morning... Trench 94, Hanford Site, Washington, 1994. Hull sections containing de-fueled reactor compartments of decommissioned nuclear-powered submarines are put in disposal trenches. The spent fuel is removed before dismantlement begins. The radioactively contaminated hull sections are then transported by barge to Hanford where they are placed in a trench for burial. The Patrick Henry was the first hull section placed in Trench 94. I don't know which one is the Gato but may she rest in peace. |
